The Datacenter

IT managers dream about facilities like this.

The first thing that a visitor to LightPoint notices is that LightPoint does not have a raised floor, and there is a good reason for it. Raised floors are good for proprietary installations, but raised floors present significant challenges in the ever changing environment of  today’s multi-customer datacenter. First of all it is difficult to undertake a thorough inspection of low and high voltage wiring when it is out of sight. Second, there are many more electrical and communications connections in a modern facility, and wiring and plumbing infrastructure impedes air flow and restricts cooling; hotspots are difficult to find and challenging to overcome. Security between customer cages is compromised, and in some cases, degradation of the flooring releases particles into the environment that can cause equipment failure.

LightPoint was built as a Telco Hotel, so the entire infrastructure is overhead. We are able to inspect all wires and connections every day (and we do). We are on the top floor so we don’t have to worry about the plumbing upstairs, and we control what happens on the roof.

The building is structural steel frame with concrete floors covered with anti-static tile. We can handle the heavy loads generated by blade servers and data storage systems.

Every cable added in a raised floor environment means that airflow and cooling for the whole facility have to be adjusted; I wonder how many times that really happens?
